Understanding Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are often referred to as "third molars." They erupt between the ages of 17 and 25. Though wisdom teeth are no different from other teeth, patients often do not have enough room to accommodate them and they may erupt at an angle, causing problems.

It's important to remove wisdom teeth because they can cause concerns like:

Image

Pain

When wisdom teeth erupt at an angle, push on the adjacent molars, or lead to the formation of a cyst, you can experience intense jaw pain.
Image

Crooked Teeth

If wisdom teeth do not have enough room in the dental arch, they can push your other teeth out of alignment, even if you've already completed orthodontic treatment.
Image

Dental Decay

When patients have crooked teeth, they often have a difficult time cleaning all surfaces of their teeth, leading to dental decay.

Misaligned Bite

As wisdom teeth push your other teeth out of alignment, your bite becomes misaligned, which can cause TMJ disorders, worn enamel, and more.

Gum Disease

Because wisdom teeth are so far back in the mouth, they are hard to clean. Tartar may develop along the gumline, causing gum disease.

Signs It May Be Time

to Remove Your Wisdom Teeth

Jaw pain or stiffness

Earaches or headaches

Crowding of the teeth

Inflamed, swollen, or bleeding gums

Though each person may experience these symptoms differently, they are still an indication that your third molars should be removed.

Prevent Dry Socket

Dry socket is a condition that can occur after a tooth is removed. If the blood clot that formed after tooth removal becomes dislodged, the underlying bone and nerves are exposed, causing pain. You can prevent dry socket by keeping gauze over your removal sites for 30-45 minutes after your procedure, avoiding drinking through a straw, and not smoking.

Eat a Soft Food Diet

Hard, chewy, and crunchy foods can cause pain and bleeding, prolonging the healing period. Patients should eat a soft food diet to minimize irritation, the chances of dry socket, and the risk of infection. Broth, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and ice cream are all good options after your third set of molars has been removed.

Shouldn't I Visit an Oral Surgeon?
